SY ANTARES iii April2013/April2014 Skipper- Rik Dyson
Having very little engineering experience prior to this job it was a big step up for me as the job entailed 70:30 engineering to deck work. I can now manage most of the systems onboard (M/E, Generators, Water maker, Air Con, Hyrdraulics) and can confidently service them all although I am still learning the troubleshooting side of things. I was in charge of making sure that all matters associated with the deck/tender (Williams 445) were well maintained. I am currently in Israel where I have been the only member of crew onboard for the last 4 months and have been in charge of all matters concerned with the running of the boat (managing contractors/accounts/engineering/safety checks etc) Rik has been encouraging me to take more responsibility in passage planning and driving the boat. I planned/oversaw the trip from Turkey down to Israel.
GREEN MARINE Feb 2013/April 2013
I started my internship working as a laminator in the components shop making parts for the new Volvo Ocean Race 65s which require a high attention to detail. I then moved to building the bulkheads for the APC 78 Fast Cat. I thoroughly enjoyed working at Green Marine but it became apparent that I wasn’t going to be able to become part of the shore crew (owing to rule changes for the next volvo) so I decided to return to working on yachts. (My leaving was nothing to do with the endless itching due to working with carbon fiber)
INTERNATIONAL YACHT RESTORATION SCHOOL (IYRS) Sept 2012/Feb2013
I have always been interested in building and mending boats and from the moment I heard about IYRS I thought it would be a good opportunity to get involved in the building side of the industry. The IYRS program covered; composite fundamentals, manufacturing methods, tooling development and repair and refinishing. We learnt skills such as vacuum infusion, open molding, CAD/CAM operations (Rhino/Surfcam), CNC machining and repair practices. We worked with glass, carbon, Kevlar fibres as well as a variety of cores on making projects such as a canoe, kiteboards and avalanche snow flukes/picks, amongst other pieces.
SY BOLERO 34m Oct 2011/Sept 2012 (9000nm) Skipper- Mike Kopman
I was in charge of all maintenance matters relating to the running of the deck/tender (Williams 445). (eg. Winch/windlass maintenance, Deck sanding, Painting touch ups, Line work (Splicing, whippings)). Mike let me park the boat often and I helped plan the crossing back to Palma de Mallorca from Antigua. I was the soul member of crew onboard during a 2 month refit in Palma (removing all deck fittings, paint the rig, varnishing). I had to ensure that the contractors were on schedule as we had a very tight deadline.
SY DRUMBEG Vitters 43m July 2010/July2011 (15000NM) Skipper- Axel Clarke
I was relief mate for a few months whilst the boat was looking for new crew during which time I was in charge of managing all matters that are associated with running the deck/tender (Castoldi 21). I am experienced tender driver and very competent at running water sports activities. We carried out an extensive yard period in Palma including pulling out the rig for repainting. I was also the sole deck crew on the boat during this period. After Cruising the Med we spent 5 months in the Caribbean before sailing across the pacific.
